{Off Shoots} Erin Austen Abbott

by Anh-Minh on December 6, 2012

I know journalists are supposed to be unbiased, but I have to come clean here: I am a huge fan of Erin Austen Abbott. She and I first connected when her shop, Amelia, became one of Anthology‘s early stockists. About a year later, I had the pleasure of meeting her in person while we both happened to be in NYC at the same time. After learning more about her personal and professional life—in addition to Amelia, she has been a travel nanny for creative types (and founded chARTer Nannies), a photographer, and art show curator—I knew we had to figure out a way to feature her home in the magazine. She’s just too interesting not to feature! It turned out, she and her husband, Sean Kirkpatrick (of Colour Revolt), were a perfect fit for our music-themed Issue No. 9.

During my interview with Erin, I loved hearing about all of the special objects in the couple’s Water Valley, Mississippi, home. Since we couldn’t include everything in the print magazine, I’m thrilled to share these additional, unpublished photos from our shoot with Erin and Sean. (And their pup, Ida! Their son, Tom Otis, was born in June.)

The hot-air balloon and clouds by Dabbs Anderson were a gift from Erin to Sean.

Cockatoo art by Eleanor Grosch and a mockingbird piece by Coulter Fussell flank a painting made by a friend from Erin’s days living in Seattle.

In the living/dining room, an antique china cabinet serves as CD storage. The hand-silkscreened sailboat pillow is from a friend’s store (Hoot + Louise) in Memphis.

Most of the kitchenware is vintage, with the exception of the latte bowls from Anthropologie.

Sean owns three guitars (two electric, one acoustic). The Johnny Cash painting in the den is by self-taught Southern artist Lamar Sorrento.
