Illustrated Walls at Ladenlokal

by kate on September 11, 2012

As you probably know, the core team at Anthology is based in the Bay Area, within a fairly short drive of one another in fact. The best part of being local is getting to meet up occasionally, not only to discuss future projects and plan upcoming issues, but also to spend time together and chat. Plus, it’s a great excuse to explore a few new cafes and restaurants in San Francisco—the creative mind needs fuel, after all, and cafes can be a great place to find design inspiration. I’ve been on the lookout for new places to suggest, and in searching for cafes online, I came across the awesome interior of the LadenLokal Cafe in Hanover, Germany.

Chalkboard paint has been a popular trend in recent years, but even though we see it everywhere, it feels far from outdated for me: I constantly see new iterations that impress me. After all, the beauty of chalkboard paint is that anything can be a canvas for the artist’s imagination, and I love the mix of typography, color, and imagery used on these columns. If this cafe were in SF, I’d be there on a regular basis, but until we relocate to Germany, I’ll simply have to admire from afar.

We are definitely pleased to see that you like our place! Thanks a lot – the feeling is mutual! We love your blog as well…

That is so much fun! I’ll have to check it out at some point when I’m over there!

Oh great! I do that too (and also on store windows with paint). As an illustrator, I really enjoyed it each time!

The chalkboard illustrations are very cool, but I love the last photo that shows the light-filled, colorful cafe in the background. So pretty! Wish I could visit today!
