In the Makers’ Picks of Issue No. 8, Araya Jansen of Wind and Willow Home shared a beautiful set of her hand-dipped wooden bowls. She uses bright pigments to contrast the natural hues and grains of the wood. Her bowls reminded me of another artist whose work I’d seen months ago through a friend. I went looking and rediscovered Greg Gallegos of Natural Selection Studio. Greg’s love of wood led him to teach himself to use a lathe in 2002, and he’s been refining his craft since.
Many of his pieces are finished with just oil and no additional colors, but my favorite pieces from his collections are those that have color washes over the highly figured wood. The bowls I remembered seeing are those above. The way Greg follows the natural contours of the wood grain makes the color feel effortless—like a part of the natural state of it. But as I started looking a little deeper into his portfolio, I was equally impressed by the series below. The high contrast of the bright exteriors and the creamy texture and color of the interiors are so unexpected but beautiful. I would love to have any of these on my table this summer!

The green cups are gorgeous!
So honored to be featured next to Greg’s work. His bowls are on my personal wish list. Thanks Anthology!
Wow, the faded blue one is gorgeous and reminds me of the sea.
