I’ve always written winter off as a bleak and colorless season, but San Francisco based photographer and food blogger Kimberly Hasselbrink knows that there are luscious, vivid hues to be found in winter—if you just know where to look. Kimberly is starting up a new bimonthly feature on her blog, The Year in Food, entitled Color Studies. It’s an extension of her wildly popular seasonal food guides, but with an emphasis on the chromatic consistency of seasonal produce. Her inaugural post, The Purples of Winter, is beautiful; maybe I’m revealing my lack of a green thumb here, but I never knew that cauliflower came in such a deep shade of lilac. If you need a dose of culinary and color inspiration, I highly recommend checking out this series and bookmarking Kimberly’s site. I’m eager to see what other hues the subsequent months will bring.
Also, if you are looking for a last minute meal for celebrating this holiday tomorrow, Kimberly has created the most amazing looking Valentine’s Day salad (shown above). Deep purple radicchio, red pomegranate seeds, and pink rio grapefruit slices are just some of the ingredients that make up this pretty dish. You can find the full recipe here on the Etsy blog, where Kimberly is a guest contributor. Thanks for sharing your lovely images with us, Kimberly!
