We hope you all have had a chance to check out our special, online-only Winter Gift Guide. It was a labor of love, and the feedback has been incredible; thank you so much to everyone! Back in September, we shot the cover with Kelly Ishikawa at Sandbox Studio in San Francisco. Kelly thought it would be fun to shoot a little stop-motion along the way, and we enthusiastically agreed. What a treat it would have been if these boxes had wrapped and assembled themselves! Here’s a few more images of the process as well, from a prototype in my studio at home to the finished wall o’ gifts. Enjoy!
Alexis and I started the stack of boxes in my home studio. Our pink Post-it numbering system came in quite handy through the wrapping process.
Prototyping the lettering. In the end we went with a thinner ribbon for a cleaner look. Alexis’ husband laser cut the wood letters for us.
Building the wall again in Sandbox Studios was super fun, and involved a number hunt, as we needed to rebuild in the same formation. Again those pink Post-its saved the day.

I love the time-lapse, so fun to see the process!
This is awesome. Love seeing the process behind big projects like these!
Very nice to see the process. It is a great picture.
Cool!
Very cool! I loved seeing the stop motion “behind the scenes” activity. Will there be a print gift guide next year?
Wow. Love this. Amazing how much work goes into making such a fleeting (and lovely) moment.
Hi, Kristen! Right now, we’re thinking that next year’s gift guide will be another digital issue. But, like this year’s guide, we’ll design it so that it can be easily printed from your computer (and still look great as a print-out).
SOOOO much work guys! It was a brilliant cover.
