One of my favorite contemporary artists is Lena Wolff. Her mixed-media works, particularly the ones with black backgrounds and galactic abstractions, remind me of magical summer nights—the kind where the air is still warm and heavy even after midnight, and filled with the hums and chirps of various insects. The dream-like mysticism in her work reminds me of Fred Tomaselli’s paintings (another favorite), but her abstract landscapes aren’t nearly as maximalist or psychedelic. Lena’s pieces have a restrained elegance that I just love.
Do you have artists or designers whose work reminds you of summer? I don’t know if it’s strange to link artists to seasons, but sometimes it just seems right…

These are incredible!
These are wonderful. Love the collision of micro and macro forces.
The celestial quality to these is really fantastic! My favorite summer-feelin’ artist is fine art photographer, Thomas Hager. See samples of his work on my blog, http://artsyforager.wordpress.com/2011/06/23/pick-of-the-crop-heralding-hager/, his website, http://www.thomashager.com and his print edition site, http://www.towneditions.com.
His images of the ocean and seashells show the soft & sensual aspects of summer in all their glory.
Lesley,
Excellent choice. I love the series of deep blue shell prints on his site. Wow. Totally soothing and summery. Thanks for sharing!
