A bit of beauty to send you into the weekend! While browsing through my favorite sites the other day, I was stopped in my tracks these collages from the Within Us series by Paul Butler, and proceeded to his website to ogle each and every one (luckily, he’s made many!). They remind me of Gerhard Richter’s painted photographs, in which colorful smears and globs of paint both obscure and elevate everyday family photos into highly evocative abstract landscapes. While it seems easy to cut out a figure, or smear paint on a photo, there’s clearly an insightful and deliberate artistic touch at work here. The result is hauntingly beautiful and wholly captivating, I must say.
