I always see a lot of old portraits like these at flea markets. While I find them interesting, it’s never enough to compel me to bring them home. I would, however, collect the entire lot of these meticulously painted portraits. During a photo shoot for the Spring 2011 issue, we got the chance to peek inside the apartment of DJ couple Matthew and Sandy Davis and see some of their paintings in person. In addition to deejaying, Matthew and Sandy also run the creative company Treatzone—creating cards, artwork, notebooks, and other handmade paper goods. The intricate graphic backgrounds in these portraits are all hand-painted, if you can believe it, and the colors are even more vivid in real life.
