{Attributes} Lisa Congdon

by kate on April 12, 2011

This Attributes is from an artist who is well-versed in collecting meaningful objects: San Francisco painter and author Lisa Congdon. Every day in 2010, Lisa rounded up and documented a selection of items from her own collections and shared them online at A Collection a Day. She has an incredible eye for composition and color, and it’s easy to spend hours browsing through the lovely series of photographs and paintings. A Collection a Day is now available in printed form as well, for the always enjoyable experience of flipping pages.

“This is a collection of some of my favorite things. As you probably guessed, neon pink is currently my favorite color, and has been for the past couple of years. I could have done a photo of just my favorite neon pink things! Included here are a few tools of my trade: my 2011 daily journal (where I make all my to-do lists), a tube of my favorite gouache paint, a paint brush, an eraser, and some painters tape (in neon pink, of course!).

“I’ve also included a couple of old keys and an old pair of scissors and an old playing card. I love having old, tarnished things mixed in with all my brightly colored modern stuff. I rounded out this collection with a few more personal items: my favorite wooden coat of arms pin (a recent purchase), my very sentimental charm necklace (which I wear every day), and a photo of me right after I was born in 1968.” — Lisa

I love the combination in this photo: the balance of shapes and textures, as well as how everything fits so well together, very puzzle like. And the pinks pop, but don’t take over everything, they just draw you in.

Lovely job. :)

I like the idea of creating a collage of sorts out of meaningful items and then photographing. It tells an interesting story. Lisa Congdon’s plate wall is one of my favorite things.
