Rococo Hardcore

by kate on March 11, 2011

Anyone who has been in the market for wallpaper knows that choosing just one from the hundreds of gorgeous options available can be near impossible. When I saw the psychedelic wallpaper-based artwork of Ludovica Gioscia, it occurred to me that these installations may reveal an ingenious solution to the problem: Use them all! It’s not a look for everyone, but the layers upon layers of pattern certainly make for a stunning visual.

For the aptly named Rococo Hardcore installation, Gioscia has created an incredible mix of pop imagery, traditional decorative prints, and abstract geometry—pushing the concept of interior decor to the point of pure decadence. With a slightly more subdued palette, I could envision this as an amazing jaw-dropping focal point of a room. What are your thoughts on the idea? Layered mismatched wallpapers: Yay or nay?

I really like the brightness of it, but I am not sure if I would put it up in my own living room…

woa! that is a bit much…BUT (and I’m certain someone has already pointed it out to you) dottie angel did a pretty wallpaper mismatch this week that I loved http://dottieangel.blogspot.com/2011/03/on-roll.html

Hi Sara + Tschitschi –
Thank you for weighing in on the subject! I agree that this look would be a bit much in a room, although I am a fan of the ripped layers I think.

Sara, thank you for sharing the link— I had not seen that yet! A much more orderly mixing of papers to be sure, with quite a nice result.

This also reminded me of the wallpapered wall in David Alhadeff’s (owner of the Brooklyn based shop the Future Perfect) apartment, which I have loved for quite some time: http://www.designspongeonline.com/2009/03/sneak-peek-david-alhadeff-of-the-future-perfect.html

I feel like I would the wallpaper based artwork as something framed instead of actually on the wall but I love the colour and texture.

Really cool idea but I’m with Sarah in that I think a big piece of it framed would look great – and possibly less messy!

it’s too messy and chaotic for my taste to be in a home. it looks neat as an exhibit but for a home it’s too much to deal with and realistically I would want to rip more pieces off after a while. or perhaps that might be the point?

I can see this working for a retail window display.

Wow! I think this is great when you want to create a whimsical space, such as a kids’ room or to brighten up a home office. Definitely a different approach to design.
