Magic Books

by kate on February 24, 2011

As design loving bibliophiles with soft spots for stop-motion films, we found this charming video irresistible in so many ways. After appearing on YouTube a couple days ago, the film has already made the rounds a bit, even appearing on Tina’s “made me smile” list over at Swiss Miss. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t break out in a grin as well, and after pressing replay several times I couldn’t resist sharing it with you all.

Be sure to watch until the very end, where the film’s creator lists every book that was involved in the film—a wonderful bonus detail, in my opinion. I like to think that if our objects had the ability to rearrange themselves, they would also have the presence of mind to color-code as well. What a world that would be!

Fantastic! Oh, the patience of the person (people) putting that video together…I enjoyed it too.
On a different note, I am a lover of interior design, but cringe when I see books color-coded. Books are beautiful, but literary art trumps visual art in this case, I think.

The Vintage Object:
Thank you for your comment! I know what you mean about the patience thing; just when I think the video is finished it goes to a whole new level. It must have taken days!

I had my books color-coded for a while, and one thing I did like about the process was how it made me more appreciative of book design. I never realized that I had so many gold spined books! It was fun, and lovely to look at. In the end I agree with you, though; my books are now organized alphabetically by subject, and it was the right move for me.

As a designer and insane book collector(am actually trying very hard to get rid of books in my collection and am finding it terribly hard), I loved this video. Thus imagine my delight when I saw one of my high school classmates, Lisa Blonder, in the credits. I love what a small world we live in!

I agree about color coded books, they look too constructed. I like more organic arrangements like this one http://www.aliceindesignland.com/blog/inside-look-modfrugal.html
