This “Dig” is inspired by the childhood home of Paula Smail, the textile designer behind Henry Road. Paula’s current textural and color-filled California abode is featured in our second issue, alongside images of the home in South Africa that she grew up in. (The latter was featured in a 1972 issue of Modern Woman.) In honor of Paula’s stylish genes and the bold and brilliant 1970s, I wanted to share some images from various interior magazines of the era. In case you needed proof that some interiors will always look great, here are a few prime examples.

Hi Kate: Love your creativity – what a great idea for a story:) Some of these images could easily be homes of today. Best, Paula
These are beautiful interiors! I received my Anthology Magazine in the mail today, and it was like opening a present! Thank you!
Thanks Paula! I’m now addicted to 70′s interiors—the floodgates are open and I can’t stop looking for images of swanky rooms.
Ryan – Thanks! I’m so glad you have the magazine in hand, I hope it provides many hours of enjoyment over the weekend:)
Interiors are simply divine. I similarly was raised in a modern minimalist Laz-Y-Boy-free home with an architect step dad. Of course at the time, I thought it was a penance and wanted a pink room with canopy bed and rec room in basement like everyone else.
Wish I had the pix to share.
What I really love about spaces is that they don’t appear decorated and really seem LIVED in.
Notice the absence of TVs also, making me think these people liked to read, talk, have dinner together, play games, etc.
It amazes me how these 1970′s interiors look so similar to this day & ages “modern design”! It’s a true testament that everything comes full circle eventually :) thanks for the great pictures & inspiration!
