{Olivetti’s Valentine typewriter, designed in 1969 by Ettore Sottsass}
Our posts next week will be entirely devoted to content related to the upcoming issue, but I certainly don’t want to neglect Valentine’s Day, which is fast approaching. Some might argue that Valentine’s Day has fallen prey to commercialization, cheap gimmicks, and excess. But that’s not a reason to discount it completely. After all, the holiday also carries a strong tradition of making things by hand. Who doesn’t remember the blizzard of paper doilies and red construction paper that filled our classrooms each year?
If you’re looking for a happy medium, a way to come to terms with the holiday and what it means, as well as a way to share your love that doesn’t involve chocolates from the drug store or a bucket of Elmer’s glue, worry not. Here are some of our favorite handcrafted, artful Valentines that are both a message of love and an object of beauty to enjoy year round.
