My friend Joe has an incredible talent for culling the web, and I greatly enjoy following his well-curated collection of interesting, beautiful, and amazing imagery. Given that his field is anthropology, I suppose it should come as no surprise that he can dig endlessly for treasures, both online and in the ground. A recent addition to his collection is a tumblr site called Foliate, where he features images of trees and interiors combined in interesting ways.
It seems like landscape and floral design have been headed in very interesting directions in recent years, as more people try to push the boundaries of design. I’m thrilled to see trends like vertical planting, urban farms, and guerrilla gardening becoming so widespread. Will the integration of large-scale foliage and trees into the architecture of homes be next? I certainly hope so.
Joe’s collection of images has also inspired me to start doing focused curating of my own, and I would love some input from readers as well. If you’d like to share an image or an idea that you find inspiring, please send it to me here. I will use submissions as a starting point for a mini online exhibition of sorts. Stay tuned for my first collection in coming weeks!

WOW. That first photo is stunning.

Stunning!
incredible top image
I once visited a house that had a large, aged tree growing in the middle of it’s living room. It was an English style country house, with exposed wooden beams and a huge tree trunk that sat in the middle of the house and ran along one side of the stairs all the way up to the second floor. There was a built in wooden bench built around the trunk in the first floor and the tree limbs came out over the the roof. I thought it was the most amazing house I had ever seen. It seemed enchanted or from a fairy tale. I wanted so badly to stay and live in this unusual house. At the time, I was probably only 8 years old and I felt it could have easily have Snow White’s home.
Love the photos, esp the top one. However, as a photographer, I have concerns…Are these images Joe took himself? If not, where are the copyright notices?
You talk abt “culling the web”…
use of images w/o credit to or permission of the photographer is a violation of copyright law.
I lived in an old pottery shed in Laguna Beach. The vines from the hillside were growing inside the bathroom walls. It was so cool!! Loved that place…
