Cardboard Sculptures by Chris Gilmour

by kate on October 11, 2010

Cardboard has been enjoying a bit of a renaissance recently, and I couldn’t be happier about it. The modest, inexpensive material has such potential for amazement, especially when it falls into an artist’s hands. Since my first glimpse at the “Print is Not Dead” video, I’ve been dying to ask Meg to make me a cardboard typewriter of my very own. In a similar vein, these sculptures by Chris Gilmour are truly marvelous.

His mastery of the material is evident from first glance, and I’m impressed with the varied scale and complexity of the objects he recreates. I would love to see these in person, feel their weight and pore over their details up close. I’m inspired to save boxes and attempt to produce a cardboard objet d’art myself. This seems like the perfect time for it as well, seeing as Halloween—the holiday that celebrates the imaginative, experimental craft lover in all of us—is just around the corner.

Oh my goodness those are amazing! Reminds me also of the cardboard computer that was at Urbanic during the Creative Inc. book release party. Beyond cool.

These are awesome. Still, the typewriter in the video remains my fave cardboard make!

That cardboard computer was also a prop from the “Print Is Not Dead” video. Glad you guys liked them!
