Photographer Kelly Ishikawa and stylist Rod Hipskind, proprietors of The Perish Trust, went to Sonoma a couple of months ago to participate in a gathering of artists, farmers, and chefs at Scribe Winery called “The Hacienda: A Midsummer Art and Food Curiosity.” The above image shows palm trees lining the dirt road that leads up to Scribe.
When Kelly shared her images of the event with us, we were floored by the amazing installation they made, affectionately dubbed “Scribe Shack.” The project shows Rod and Kelly’s hallmark reuse and reinvention style or as they call it, “being ecologically savvy without all the stereotypes of a green design.”
Rod and Kelly placed the rustic shack, which evokes the feel of an “early settler’s shanty” in the middle of a garden surrounded by sunflowers and tomatoes.
Rod explains: “We approached it the good old-fashioned way: by stealing pallets off the street to use as the base of the entire room. They comprise our foundation floor and four walls. We trolled the salvage yards and flea markets to outfit it with dining room furniture, windows, a corner sink, and a metal porthole door. We found 1930s warehouse lights on Craigslist, then rewired and mounted them to a four-by-four-inch reclaimed beam and hoisted it up for our chandelier. In its entirety, the whole is modular and can be rebuilt in any space that can fit its ten-by-fourteen-foot stature!”
And this worn, artistic-meets-romantic vibe continues into the winery’s hacienda, further enhanced by the stylings of other artists participating in the event.
And yes, we should point out that this talented duo’s home and shop are also featured in our inaugural issue.

This looks like a place with plenty of freedom to let the creative juices flow – I wonder if they ever put an awning over their shack against the sun? It can get so hot in Sonoma!
How cool!! What an adventure and I am so excited to see more of their home!
I have a Giveaway from the French Basketeer I think you will love!
